Ilocano Essays: HUGS

"Can I get a hug?" she said as she was about to clear the front door. Her husband who had just prepared her lunch box stood there motionless, slow to react.

"Hugs. Ania cad dayta?" he replied as he wiped his still sleepy, half-shut eyes.

"Hugs... castoy ni..." as she embraced her husband and gave him a peck on the cheeks. "Behave yourself. I'll call you at lunch." She waved goodbye, getting into her almost brand new white Lexus SUV.

He closed the front door shaking his head. Agwing-wingi-wing, "Ado la amin..." he muttered as he went inside, back to his still warm bed. He wanted to get some more sleep but the rays of the morning sun peering through the blinds won't let him.

He went for a cup of coffee and the newspaper. He poured over the headlines. Nothing interesting. Sports. Same old news. Local news. Now there's a story. They are going to build a new sewer treatment plant just miles from their property. That could be good and it could be bad. Good in that there will be jobs and bad because of accidental spills that might contaminate their private water well.

He turned on the TV set to get some early morning news and to watch the traffic report. He always liked to watch the traffic picture telecasts from those surveillance cameras posted on the freeways. His eyes caught an incident being reported by Highway 101. News service vehicles were crawling all over the place. Ambulances. Firetrucks. Highway 101 southbound? Why that is the route that his wife takes to go to work. He started to pray - at first quietly, in his mind. "Please Lord. Keep my wife safe."

He heard the trailing end of the newscast. "News Flash... there has been a fatal accident on highway 101 southbound. A Lexus SUV hit the guard rail, jumped the track and careened into the oncoming traffic, colliding with a semi tractor trailer. The driver of the SUV sustained major injuries and has been taken to Laurel Heights Hospital for treatment. The names of both injured drivers are being withheld pending further police investigation and notification of relatives and family."

Lexus SUV... but what color? Suddenly he became frantic thinking about what if it was his wife's car that was involved in the accident. For the first time that day he felt very heavy and uneasy. He regretted not having given his wife a hug when she asked for it. He knew full well what she wanted. She is the most carinosa woman he has ever known. Her voice rang loud in his ears... "Can I get a hug?" And he heard himself uttering that silly answer, "Hugs. Ania cad dayta? Ado la amin..."

Just then the phone rang. The moment of truth. Could it be the police? The hospital? Please God no. "Hello lacay co a tuppol! Adaacon ditoy trabaho! Comusta met ta almosar mo?" He was stunned. He could not speak. All that could be heard was his soft sobbing. "You okay?" his wife asked.

Finally he was able to blurt out, "I love you. I will give you hugs anytime..."
